A little over a week ago my mom, my mom's friend Diane, and my Aunt Betty joined me in Italy. In fact, they took full advantage of their fleeting time and saw most of Northern Italy and even beyond! I was happy to join them and my Italian cousin, Daniele for two nights in Venice. It is such a peculiar city; beautiful certainly - but it takes some time to wrap your head around the fact that an entire city can function while being plopped on over a 100 different canals.
It was slightly expensive in some cases but I was not overly surprised considering that they thrive on tourism. I don't think there is any other place in the world quite comparable to Venice. I recommend if you ever get the chance to go - don't hesitate! (& I personally think the gondola rides are well worth the 80-100 EURO; you can't see Venice and not do the gondola!)
